WHO WE ARE
A non-profit, community-based, minimal-cost basketball program affiliated with the Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletics Association (VSSAA) for girls in grade 6 to 11, with the aim of providing opportunities for skills development as well as for those seeking competition in game/tournament play at the U13/U15/U17 levels in the spring to fall off-season.
“Rise to every occasion, give our best effort, and make those around us better as we do it.”
– John Wooden
Participants from beginners to advanced are all welcome, with opportunities available for the more advanced in a competitive stream of games and tournaments. Players from all regions are welcome, with a primary focus being to provide development and playing opportunities in the Vancouver South/Central local demographic area. The program is meant to be an inclusive program for the local area and not school-specific.
All coaches are volunteers with a wide range of qualifications and experiences, from NCCP coaching certification levels, sport administration and management, to community youth and sports programming and teaching Physical and Health Education at the secondary age levels, with years of coaching experience that span the high school and collegiate levels.
Through volunteerism, donations, sponsorship, and individual participant support the aim is to minimize or if needed waive fees. The program philosophy is to remove financial barriers and improve access for local area youth to participate in quality developmental and competitive sport opportunities.
The Aces Basketball Program is thankful to the CLICK (Contributing to Lives of Inner City Kids) Foundation for their support in the form of a grant that allowed the Aces to look after some initial costs in starting up the program. The Aces Basketball Program is also honoured to be one of five recipients of the 2019 City of Vancouver Community Sports Champions Awards as part of the 2019 Women Deliver Conference; this award also involved receiving a grant that has greatly assisted the program towards meeting its objectives of reducing financial barriers and increasing access for participants. In addition to playing the sport, the Vancouver Aces Basketball Program also seeks to provide opportunities for participants in areas of volunteerism, leadership, coaching and mentorship, seeking to develop skills and core values that will enable and empower local youth.
